Join Nassau Suffolk Law Services as we continue to illuminate pathways to justice under our new name, Legal Services of Long Island (LSLI). Help us guide our communities and neighbors in need towards accessible legal services for all.
After nearly six decades of dedicated service, Nassau Suffolk Law Services announces its new name: Legal Services of Long Island (LSLI). This rebranding underscores the organization’s commitment to providing critical legal assistance while emphasizing its distinct identity as the region’s largest nonprofit provider of free civil legal services, separate and apart from any government agencies.
Since 1966, LSLI has been at the forefront of poverty law on Long Island, focusing on cases involving shelter, food, healthcare, and family issues. The organization serves over 15,000 people annually through direct legal representation, saving New York State taxpayers more than $2.2 million by avoiding emergency shelter costs and helping clients move off public assistance.
“While our name has evolved, our mission remains the same: to provide unwavering legal support to Long Island’s most vulnerable residents,” said Victoria Osk, Executive director of Legal Services of Long Island. “This change highlights our broader vision and renewed commitment to combating serious housing problems, ensuring equal access to government benefits, and protecting the rights of marginalized communities across the island.”
LSLI’s expertise extends to housing preservation, a critical issue given the increasingly prohibitive cost of living on Long Island which puts more of our neighbors at risk of homelessness. The organization has been instrumental in preventing housing loss through its work in eviction defense and foreclosure prevention.
As part of its innovative approach, LSLI provides extensive community education, outreach, and partnerships with lay advocates. These efforts, combined with their direct services, offer comprehensive support to Long Island’s low-income communities.
LSLI’s services are free and primarily income-based, with some programs serving special populations without financial eligibility guidelines.
The organization invites the public to visit its new website, www.legalservicesli.org, to learn more about its history, services, and opportunities for involvement.
